Premiering The Cosy Night In
Will Smith’s first major cop film Bad Boys came out over 24 years ago, which is a scary thought. So it makes sense that the premiere of his latest police drama should be experienced a little differently. Released on Netflix (not at the cinema) Bright was the streaming platform’s first Hollywood feature. With it came the chance to experiment with the idea of a public screening. Forget red carpets and paparazzi, the Bright premier became an embellished recreation of a home movie experience.
Not knowing what they were in for, guests arrived at a suburban home lit up in full Christmas light display. Inside, the atmosphere was more understated, with the intimate loungeroom as the movie theatre for the evening. A group of Sydney socialites and journalists cosied up together for a night in front of the TV, watching Will Smith in his latest cop drama while eating hotdogs from the kitchen. Just to make sure the night wasn’t too chill, actors were brought in to create some mid-movie drama.
