“Open for Lunch is an unforgettable dining experience and a celebration of food, produce and award-winning chefs along George Street” Minister for Tourism Ben Franklin
Sydney’s George Street was shut to trams and lined with hay bales for a true blue American-style hoedown in celebration of 2022 Open for Lunch event series. Designed, curated and produced by Alfred, the sold-out George Street Hoedown was one of five unique long lunches spread across Sydney for one afterooon only, featuring some of the city’s top chefs and restaurants.
The George Street Hoedown was hosted by Love Police and Porteño, Wyno and Bodega chef-restaurateurs Ben Milgate and Elvis Abrahanowicz who dished up their take on a smoky Southern barbecue, including pulled pork, fried flathead tacos, Nashville hot chicken and chess pie to hundreds of guests embracing the hoedown spirit dressed in cowboy hats, boots, kerchiefs and their best double denim.
Red-chequered picnic tables stretched along the middle of George Street while revellers ate, danced and enjoyed live country and western performances from Nashville musicians Joshua Hedley and Emily Nenni, with additional tunes by Love Police DJs. Boot-scooters kept cool drinking beers from Young Henrys, as well as Banana Old Fashioneds and Lynchburg Lemonade whisky cocktails, while a pop-up from iconic Newtown vintage store Route 66 traded in exclusive merchandise such as trucker hats and Western-style shirts for those who needed a little bit more country in their outfit.
